In a media release, the World Religion Day committee stated,
“This year, we’re very honoured to have WRD celebration at the beautiful Dan Pine Sr. Healing Lodge Sunday, January 21st at 2pm. This year’s theme reflects the fact that Dan Pine Sr. very much liked the word “harmony” and had a vision of a healing place where all groups could meet.”
The theme for 2018 is ‘A Vision of Harmony For All.’
In the past few years, the annual World Religion Day Celebration has been held at Beth Jacob Synagogue, Central United Church, Sault College, and Algoma University.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF WORLD RELIGION DAY INTERNATIONALLY AND IN SAULT STE. MARIE.
INTERNATIONALLY
World Religion Day is an interfaith observance initiated in 1950 by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States, celebrated worldwide on the third Sunday in January each year.
Though initiated in the United States, World Religion Day has come to be celebrated internationally.
Its purpose is to promote the idea that the spiritual principles underlying the world’s religions are harmonious, and to suggest that religions can play a role in unifying humanity.
IN SAULT STE. MARIE
Twenty-six years ago, Roya Mogharrabi and the local Baha’i community began organizing World Religion Day Services in Sault Ste. Marie. Over all those years, members of virtually every Faith community joined with the Baha’is to celebrate the event, sharing their religious traditions in a spirit of In 2015, with the addition of friends from other faiths and cultures to plan the service, the “Volunteer Interfaith Committee of Sault Ste. Marie” was born.
The Committee believes that when representatives of different religions and cultures meet for fellowship and an exchange of ideas, these people grow in respect for each other and are strengthened in their efforts to encourage this respect in the local community and the world at large.
This planning committee includes people representing numerous religions and cultures. We invite others who are interested to join the committee.
The World Religion Day Celebration will take place on January 21st, 2018, 2 pm at The Dan Pine Sr. Healing Lodge, Garden River, Ontario.
