The weather was perfect for Mr. Bon Soo, the friendly mascot of one of Canada’s longest running winter carnivals, but windchills close to -25c are not exactly ideal for those who attended the opening ceremonies Friday Night at the Machine Shop.
Thank goodness for the fire breathing dragon to help heat things up.
The Heavy Metal Dragon, new to the carnival is 30 feet long, 19 feet high, shoots massive fireballs and has special lighting effects , a state of the art sound system with DJ music kept the chill away. Certainly a crowd-pleaser as were the bum slides for the kids that officially opened Friday evening.
This is the second year that the Ontario Winter Carnival Bon Soo was hosted at the Machine Shop that also allows participants to warm up and grab something to eat while listening to live entertainment like Jeff & Jeff (Jeff McNeice and Jeff McCourt) entertaining the crowd.
Local dignitaries, MP Terry Sheehan along with Matt Shoemaker, representing the City of Sault Ste. Marie touted the benefits of the annual winter carnival. “I don’t care what anyone says, this is the best winter carnival in Canada!” Joining Sheehan was Federal Minister of Small Business and Tourism, Bardish Chagger who spoke of how famous Mr. Bon Soo is right across Canada.
The opening also included an awesome firework display that sets the stage for a full first weekend of the 55th Ontario Winter Carnival – Bon Soo.
