Northern Ontario Area Cadet Biathlon
Four biathletes from Sault Ste Marie’s 2310 Army Cadets are advancing to the all Ontario, Regional Cadet Biathlon. Cassandra Breckenridge and Kaylee Marcil as well as Simon Beckett and Seth Mason earned medals at this past weekend‘s Northern Ontario Area Cadet Biathlon.
They competed against Sea, Army and Air cadets from across Northern Ontario including local 46 Sea cadets and the 155 Air cadets at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club.
”I was happy with my skiing and the targets I knocked down”, Casandra stated shortly after the relay race on Sunday the second day of the competition. Kaylee said going into the competition, “I feel a lot better about my skiing after working hard on my cardio training” and that her goal was to advance to the Regional Cadet Biathlon Competition at the Rod and Gun Club on weekend of 10th and 11th of February. Also competing on the 2310 Army Cadet Biathlon Team is Dylan Gallant-Brood, Quinn Johnson, Jerik Lott, Meckenzie Pigon.
The 46 Sea Royal Sovereign Biathlon team members that competed were, Kaleb Barkley, William Mason, Ethan Ross, Derrick Rouleau, Joshua Ruddy, Jushua Socchia. The 155 Borden Gray GC Air Cadets team consisted of Makayla Buswa, Harmony Buswa, Marcus Decerbo, Ethan Irwin and Sidney Moore.
The top male and female athletes are aged 12 to 18 years of age and will be represented their communities from across Ontario when they are here for the Regional Cadet Biathlon which the public is invited to attend. They all have their sights set to participate in this Olympic-style competition which consists of athlete’s cross-country skiing 1-2 km loops through the challenging terrain of Sault Ste Marie and shooting .22-calibre rifles at falling-plate targets in the range stadium.
The best combined skiing time and shooting scores will determine who will make up Team Ontario and advance to the fourth stage of the Canadian Cadet Organization National Cadet Biathlon held in Brookvale, PEI, March 7th to 11.
