Trudeau warns senators not to thwart will of Canadians on marijuana bill

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reminding senators that his government was elected on a promise to legalize recreational marijuana — a subtle warning that they should not attempt to thwart the will of Canadians or the government they elected.

The reminder comes amid some uncertainty over the fate of the pot legalization bill as it faces a second reading vote in the Senate this evening.

Ordinarily, second reading — a vote on a bill in principle — would not be a big hurdle but, in this case, the 33 Conservative senators are vowing to vote en masse against Bill C-45.

The Conservatives no longer dominate the 105-seat upper house but with more than a dozen independent and independent Liberal senators travelling on Senate committee business and a handful of others potentially voting against the bill, Senate insiders believe tonight’s vote could be very tight.

While the unelected Senate exists to scrutinize and suggest improvements to bills passed by the House of Commons, Trudeau says Canadians voted to end the criminal prohibition on cannabis when they elected his Liberal government.

He says the criminal regime has not protected Canadian kids, who are among the highest under-age users of marijuana in developed countries, and has put up to $7 billion every year in the pockets of organized crime.

“The current system does not work,” Trudeau said following an event in New Brunswick.

“This is not something that Canadians want to see continued.”

  1. I’m from The Soo and have lived in Colorado for 25 years. MJ is a disaster. They talk about the positive tax revenue. It is a lie. A big one. Our state generates about $1.5 billion in revenue from MJ and $200 million in taxes. We have about 500 dispensaries, usually in scummy, lower-end, poor areas. The personal and social destruction to society is enormous. The other people who disagree with this are the pothead fools who are irresponsible, and usually on welfare or working at the car wash. This industry is destructive to minds, healthy communities, and an effective and necessary workforce. You don’t build a thriving, innovative society, educational system, or competitive workforce on potheads and drug thugs. Colorado has many problems from this false lie about marijuana legalization. Don’t be fooled like many foolish people in this state are.

    • Sugar and unhealthy eating does more harm than cannabis. This will be very beneficial to Canada. Not only economically beneficial, but also by not making criminals out of people that use it and harm no one.

    • It is not the cannabis I am against. It is the Government. They are always finding ways to collect money from us all. Then they start into new laws and they end up with total confusion amongst their selves. This will end up being nothing but a cash cow for the government in power. Trust me, they won’t be using any of this money to help the people who need help. This is what I’m against.

    • Sharon, trudeau’s comments specifically say he is trying to remove money from organized crime. While the government is just another form, id much rather give my money to them then the ones pushing hard drugs to my kids.

    • If I’m correct, The government is wanting to control marijuana which is a soft drug. The hard drugs are going to still be out there. The government controls too much of our lives now. They control alcohol, ( we still have alcoholics) they also control how we raise our children ( now our children are out of control ). They are now going to change the words we use, (we can’t say man, woman, mother or father any more), so now the children won’t have mothers or fathers, ( they will all be orphans I guess.) This is getting out of hand. Even our police are restricted too much. They have to be so careful as to how they even grab a person. It’s too ridiculous as far as I’m concerned. The government has stuck their noses into peoples personal lives, and now they are trying to blame us, who voted them into these positions. We are gradually losing all of our rights as human beings. I find this very saddening. These are just some of my personal opinions, not everyone see’s things the way I do. That is OK, because we all have a right of control over our own thoughts…

      • Absolutely well stated Sheron Belair !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, sadly, there’s those out there who won’t agree with your synopsis. And we will all pay the price for ignorance.

    • Sheron Belair yes exactly, where does this bizarre brainwashing/indoctrination end? mother and father are now dirty words? time to revisit george orwells 1984.

  2. “This is not something that Canadians want to see continued.” ??

This is not something that Trudeau wants to see continued or he will be kicked to the curb for certain!
