Downtown Church transformed into impressive Marketplace

The 2018 Silent Auction and Flea Market begins tomorrow!

What began in 1983 as a fundraiser for capital projects at Central United Church in Sault Ste. Marie’s central downtown area, continues 35 years later.

The Silent Auction & Flea Market is one of the church’s main annual fundraising initiatives, providing funds for projects such as a new roof, new furnace, painting, carpeting, masonry repairs, electrical repairs, kitchen cupboards and the ongoing maintenance required for upkeep to the Heritage building.

Located at the corner of Spring St and Albert St., Central United Church volunteers begin the daunting task of building a large catalogue of Silent Auction bid items on the church’s main floor.

With over 340 items up for bid this year, long-time Silent Auction committee member, Betty-Lou Aubin, gave Superior Media a tour of the spectacular collection featured for 2018.

Further to the silent auction items on the main floor, there is a ‘pop-up’ ChuckWagon and sit down café – which features homemade food items like chili, soup, sandwiches, pie by the slice and other homemade desserts.

This wonderful band of women have been working tirelessly to organize the downstairs area (Flea Market) Central United Church. Grace Black, Alma Robinson, Grace Segerklist, Catherine ‘Kitty’ Caverly, Maureen Zodrow, Lillian MacDougall, Marjorie Sullivan.

The extremely popular ChuckWagon runs for the duration of the day on  Thursday and Friday during the event and is ‘manned’ by members of Central UC’s Men’s Club.

The Sault community is invited to come to the church for some nourishment and friendly banter which ensues in the area in and around the ChurckWagon.

The main floor also features an impressive Bake Sale running both Thursday and Friday.

In the downstairs area of Central UC, the large hall is transformed into an indoor flea market. Items are too numerous to list, but it is safe to say, there is something for everyone amongst the huge collection.

This year, the event will also host a separate room downstairs where Jewelry will be featured. Tireless volunteer, Maureen Zodrow and her sister Kitty are the driving force behind all activities in the downstairs area. Maureen Zodrow begins sorting and storing items for the flea market over the Fall and Winter – items donated by members & friends of the congregation.

The Central Closet – a gently used clothing closet will also be open all day on Thursday and Friday.

Each year, Central UC’s Silent Auction and Flea Market brings in around $20,000 for ongoing projects. But more than that, Silent Auction committee member Joyce Duncan told Sautonline – “It’s an event where everyone involved in the Church comes together to help – It’s a time for fellowship as well. From set-up to clean-up – it’s all hands on deck.”

Duncan also stated that numerous businesses and restaurants in and around Sault Ste. Marie contribute items to the Silent Auction bid catalogue.

On behalf of the Silent Auction committee, Duncan expressed gratitude to all of the businesses and individuals who have supported the Silent Auction over the years, including 2017.

The 34th Annual Silent Auction and Flea Market –  10:00 am –  7:00 pm. Thursday April 26th  & Friday April 27th  and Saturday April 28th.

On Saturday, April 29th, the Flea Market continues from 9:00 am  til noon, with items greatly reduced in price – at 50% off.

See you at the ChuckWagon.
