Kindergarten registration for the 2018/2019 school year is continuing at the Algoma District School Board. Registrations are being accepted for children born in 2013 (who can be registered for Senior Kindergarten) and children born in 2014 (who may be registered for Junior Kindergarten).
Over the past few weeks, a media campaign ran throughout the district with messaging to help address the question of why we ask families to register early in the year for a child beginning school in September. Registering early allows schools time to plan and prepare for the arrival of students in the fall. By registering early, our schools are able to add families to the invitation list for their “Welcome To Kindergarten” celebrations. This is an event typically held in April or May. Youngsters are invited to visit their classroom, take their first school bus ride, and engage in interactive learning activities with their family members that teach early math and literacy skills. At the end of their visit, they receive a special bag full of school supplies, books and games to continue the learning at home.
The Welcome to Kindergarten orientation helps create the foundation for positive relationships between parents, students and the school community that helps set the stage for a smooth transition to school and to prepare the child for a fun and successful first year in school. The event is created by The Learning Partnership. A number of resources for parents to access at home are shared on their website www.thelearningpartnership.ca and they reinforce the message that the parent is the child’s first and best teacher.
Information about Kindergarten registration is available on the Algoma District School Board website at www.adsb.on.ca including a list of required documents to enable us to register a child for Kindergarten.
