The United Way and Campaign Chair, Sonny Spina, are finally under way on their “Pedals for Possibilities.” The group has organized a two day biking event all for the purpose of raising donations for the United Way organization, a group dedicated to improving lives in local communities and worldwide.
Sonny, a constable with the Sault Police, wears badge number 283 and used that number as motivation. 283 kilometers to be biked over the two day period between May 16th-17th, as well as a $283,000 goal for the community to be raised.
This trip isn’t going to be done alone either. Joining Sonny the first day were city staff members who cycled right alongside him from Canadian Carver all the way to their end destination in Elliot Lake. The remainder of the trip is where the community plays a large part.
Bikers of all ages are going to be participating during different parts of the day during the 17th. Participants have all collected $200 dollars in donations or more, plus they have committed themselves to at least 38 kilometers of the ride. This ride will see Sonny visit most of the schools in the area, elementary and highschool, starting at Sault College and ending the day at 6 p.m. at the Water Tower Inn, where the announcement will be made to declare the total amount raised from the event.
Sonny has had his fair share of training to prepare him for this two day biking event, from indoor bike trainers at home, to even finding a bike club while in the Bahamas. A man who has dedicated so much time into the community and 12 years with United Way, has this initiative close to his heart. Not only is he the campaign chair, he now even has some fresh ink on his arm. A tattoo representing “pedals283”, commemorating this event on his left arm.
The community has had an outpouring of support and it doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime between now and the end of the day May 17th. For more information, please visit pedalsforpossibilites.com
