Steve Butland Will Not Seek Re-election

Steve Butland with students from Sault College

Long time local politician, Steve Butland has wore many political hats over his career, from councillor, to Mayor and MP. Butland announced last week that he is hanging up his public servant hat and will not seek another term as councillor for ward 1.

In a release issued last week, Butland said.

“It’s now an appropriate time to end my career in municipal politics” says Ward One Councillor Steve Butland. “I’m appreciative of the residents of Ward One for allowing me to serve 23 years; a challenging but gratifying period of time.”

“My participation in initiatives such as the Innovation Centre, the flags at City Hall, the Northern Community Centre, the John Rhodes facility expansion, the Essar Centre, Casino, alternative energy projects and various environmental issues are now a part of our local landscape and bring with them a level of great satisfaction.”

“The dynamics of the municipal scene have changed dramatically with issues becoming more complex and requiring even more in-depth research”

“As to the future, it is my hope that both Smart City and Smart Grid projects become realities.”

“The resilience and compassion of our citizens make me a proud life-long resident of our wonderful city.”
