The Water Tower Inn Big Cup Scramble for the United Way Raises $60,000 for the Endowment Fund.

The energy was palpable from the moment golfers began to arrive Monday at the Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club for the Big Cup Scramble for the United Way, presented by The Water Tower Inn. Inn Proprietor and Tournament Visionary, JJ Hilsinger, did a “rain dance” in his SAXX underwear (SAXX was our “Male Supporting Cup” sponsor), and the skies cleared just in time for the shotgun start for this sold out tournament.

The Big Cup Scramble is the evolution of the United Way’s Charity Golf Classic, which has been held annually for 21 years. Golfers play into paint-can-size holes, making the tournament much more approachable for all levels of golfers: “The big cups are great!” said Rocky O’Neil, Sales Manager at Rogers Media. “One of my team members had not even seen a golf club until Friday, and we’re still one under par!”

This year, the Planning Committee, with hospitality-veteran JJ Hilsinger playing a visionary role, ensured that golfers would experience fun and hospitality from arrival at the course to departure from awards dinner. The committee dedicated themselves to developing the Big Cup theme with everything from swag bags with a pair of SAXX underwear or a $50 bra voucher to Yes! It fits, to big cups of coffee and big cup donuts at arrival, to big cups of beer and popcorn on the course, to Build Your Own Big Cup of Noodles for the awards banquet. In addition, golfers played at two very unique holes: the Bra Dilemma, a putting challenge around four colourful brassieres, and the SAXX Ball Park Pouch™ – yes, the Ball Park Pouch was the hole!

Post-tournament, golfers returned to The Water Tower Inn for a delicious dinner, and a tribute auction to long-time United Way volunteer, board member, and committee chair, Bob Wilding. Entertainer, Tim Murphy, ignited the crowd with a passionate speech about the great need in our community, and the hand that the United Way gives to raise people from poverty to possibility. As a result, the auction itself raised $10,000.

“It was amazing and we are thrilled with the results!”, Maureen Dodd, Director, Stakeholder Relations & Public Affairs for the United Way shared. “What was raised here tonight goes directly to the United Way Endowment Fund, which provides funding for community projects that support United Way’s 5-year strategy to reduce poverty in our community.”

The Big Cup Scramble Planning Committee and the United Way kindly thanks all of its golfers, volunteers, and its many generous sponsors: The Water Tower Inn, Rogers Media (KISS 100.5/Country 104.3), Schuster, Boyd, MacDonald, Northern Superior Brewing Co., SAXX Underwear, Yes!
