Local Auto Dealers Support Motive Power Training at Sault College

Today, Sault College along with Maitland Ford Lincoln and Northside Toyota announced an exciting and unique community partnership in support of student learning at Sault College. The two local dealerships have engaged in a reciprocal partnership with the College that gives Automotive Apprentices an opportunity to enhance practical, hands-on skills on a class leading fleet of vehicles.

This new partnership complements the implementation of a three year plan to redesign and renovate Motive Power shops and classrooms, install new technology and purchase new equipment to enhance training for Motive Power apprentices. This project valued at $2.2 million was funded by the Province of Ontario through Apprenticeship Enhancement Funds.

The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development provided $75,000 toward this project through the Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund.  With the $75,000, Sault College purchased six vehicles from  Maitland Ford Lincoln and Northside Toyota with recent technologies including a: 2014 Ford Focus, 2013 Ford Fusion, 2013 Lincoln MKX, 2012 Toyota Rav 4, 2014 Toyota Corolla, 2012 Mazda 6.

“Sault College is honoured to have the support of Maitland Ford Lincoln and Northside Toyota, two leading industry vehicle dealers and strong community partners,” said David Orazietti, Dean Aviation, Trades and Technology, Natural Environment and Business. “Through this partnership, our students will have access to popular vehicle brands and models, which will help to ensure that our students are at the forefront of automotive learning. These dealerships have made a significant investment in our students, which will give them greater diversity in their training and prepare them for their future careers in this field.”

Northside Toyota also established the Northside Toyota Automotive Excellence Award student scholarship for an automotive student pursuing a career in Automotive Repair. “Northside Toyota is very proud to be partnering with Sault College and the Motive Power Automotive program. Giving students the opportunity to work on industry leading vehicle models and rewarding students for their hard work with our newly established automotive excellence award is a great way for us to give back to both the automotive industry and our local community. We look forward to continuing this valued partnership with Sault College,” said Mario Palumbo, Dealer Principal, Northside Toyota.

As part of this partnership Maitland Ford Lincoln has provided our students with access to Ford’s service information on their vehicles and a Ford IDS and Laptop (Integrated Diagnostic Software), which gives access to manufacturer level diagnostics in order to communicate with vehicles to diagnose and repair.

“This level of technology is very important for apprentices to be exposed to for repairing and diagnosing today’s vehicles so they are prepared for the ongoing changes in the automotive industry,” said Steve Robinson, Service Manager, Maitland Ford Lincoln. “It’s vitally important that students have the hands on resources to be able to master the skills that will be demanded of them in this fast paced, ever changing world of automotive technology.  We have had a long term relationship with Sault College through the apprenticeship program and are thrilled to be a part of this unique new partnership going forward.  We are fortunate to have this outstanding Motive Power program in our community. It benefits us all.”

As part of this partnership, Maitland Ford Lincoln and Northside Toyota also have advertising opportunities throughout the College and in the Motive Power lab to highlight their strong community support and investment and impact on local education.
