Sault Area Hospital held their annual general meeting today in the Orazetti Auditorium.
Not only was this a meeting that boasted great numbers for the hospital, it also took time to recognize the contributions of their staff.
Four awards were handed out to the recipients in a room full of peers, family and friends, to honour the winners on just how hard they worked to be in that position.
The employee iCcare award went to Norie Tapiru-Cormack, who works in the housekeeping. During her acceptance speech she had everyone in the room laughing, as it was more than evident that she truly does treat everyone like family, as mentioned by her colleagues.
The physician iCcare award went to Dr. Derek Garniss, who was cheered on by his wife and two sons in the stands. Dr. Garniss was described in the handout as “a compassionate physician, who consistently exemplifies our ICcare values in his interactions with patients, their families and colleagues.”. He has been apart of the hospital’s emergency department since 2004.
The iCcare Volunteer recipient who was described as someone who “greets every patient with warmth and openness, making each person feel special and truly cared for.” This was none other than Jackie Tomchak, who has spent 32 years volunteering her own time to proper patient care. She actively helps in fundraisers for the hospital, as well as “adds her special tough in all she does, especially in her baking” said the handout given out by SAH officials.
The Dr. Hutchinson Award recipient went to Alan McLean, who was more than humbled to earn the honour. He was a big part in the development of the Neighborhood Resource Centre, along with just shy of 30 years in the medical profession in the Soo. He was a member of the hospitals emergency department before shifting roles to Chief of Staff in 2006. In the handout referenced above, it was said “Dr. McLean is motivated not by what is easy, but by what is right and just.”.
We congratulate all four recipients of such prestigious awards.
The hospital was also pleased to announce their Operating Margin total. Their target over the course of 2017/18 was $500,000, which was beaten as they turned a surplus of $800,000. This total also surpass their total surplus from the last AGM, which was $266,622.
