Engines revved as boaters geared up for the third annual Can-AM President’s Cup VIP Poker Run on Saturday morning.
This run took participants from the Roberta Bondar Marina to Thessalon, stopping at various places in between to collect cards in hopes of having the winning poker hand at the end. This year’s prize is $10,000 cash.
“What we’ve noticed is a lot of folks want to see the boats as they start to make their way down the channel, so I know from my contacts along the way that folks are lining the shores – Thessalon, Richard’s Landing, Hilton Beach – are all going to have great turnouts, and there are folks that want to see the boats actually start up, so we’re getting folks down here too as well,” said Alana Kenopic, Manager of Sports Tourism, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie of this year’s turnout. “Last year we had 36 (boats). “We’re down a few boats this year, just with breakdowns and some folks got caught up with travel, but what we do have is more crew. So the boats that are here brought more friends with them on their boats. So we actually have more numbers.”
Saturday’s run wraps up with drinks, dinner, and prizes at the Bushplane Museum at 6:30 p.m.
The event continues into Sunday with “Ride of a Lifetime” Charity boat rides. For $100, you can take a 20-minute ride in one of the poker run boats. All proceeds raised will be going to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie.
