For Chris, Mom’s the Word

Sault Ste. Marie has a wide variety of places to go when you want to dine out. One of these diverse eateries is the Croatian Corner deli.

Croatian Corner sells a variety of food, from their ever-popular cabbage rolls and perogies, to locally-sourced meats and cheeses, imported chocolates and wafers, and so much more.

Owner Chris Tomas says the business has been in the Sault for three years – first serving from the Mill Market, and then moving to the location they’re currently at on Bruce St. about a year and a half ago.

“We were preparing food here (at the Bruce St location) and bringing it down there (to the Mill Market) but then we opened up the storefront last February,” he said. “We’re still at the Mill Market – every Saturday from 8-2 are our summer hours. We just do the perogies and cabbage rolls hot there, and then we also have frozen foods that we sell down there.”

Tomas has no formal chef training, but instead credits his parents for his interest in creating Croatian dishes.

“Everything is pretty much what I learned from my mom, and then some of the other people that work here brought other things to the deli also,” he explained. “I’m Canadian, but my parents both came from Croatia, and my mom’s always cooked for us at home. She used to do the cabbage rolls and perogies out of her house and then I kind of took over. She’s helped me to get started, and now I’m doing it and I’ve got other help.”

He said his mother still influences him to this day.

“My mom’s a big influence. She’s gotten a lot older, so she’s slowed down quite a bit, but she still calls a couple of times a day to see how things are going and she always wants to make sure everything’s going okay.”

Croatian Corner has also recently become more involved in the community. They recently raised $3500 for the United Way and Pedals for Possibilities.

“That was the first time we’ve done anything (with the community),” he said. “We just kind of felt like the timing was right and we’re established a little bit more, so we ended up doing something and giving something back to the community.”

In honor of Croatia’s place in the World Cup, Tomas said the deli will be offering deals on Saturday – the next day Croatia plays in the series.

“On Saturday, game day, we’ll be giving away a free sausage and sauerkraut to anybody that comes in with a Croatia jersey or t-shirt on, or something that supports the Croatian soccer team and the World Cup.”
