Metal In the Key of Lee

Aaron that is.

Lee Aaron (born Karen Greening) was like the Marsha of the Brady Bunch or the Blair of The Facts of Life for many a young boy in the 80’s. She had the looks, the rebellious attitude, the stage presence and the confidence of someone years her elder. She also had (and still has) unique and raw talent. She was known as the Metal Queen because of a title track of her second studio album.

Lee Aaron

During the next 20 years, the talented linguist released many albums that produced hits such as “Sweet Talk”, “Whatcha Do To My Body”, “Hands On”, and of course “Metal Queen”

Lee’s early career found her success mainly in Canada and Europe, as the American market has always been hard to tap into unless you were from South of the border. Inevitably she made some American headway and thus is known around the world as one of rocks finest singers.

Skipping ahead a bit; from 2000 until 2015 Lee experimented with jazz and even sang opera in a production called 101 Songs for the Marquis De Sade.

In 2016 though, Lee returned to her roots and released another rock album titled Fire and Gasoline which got rave reviews. New York Observer rated it one of the top 10 underrated rock albums of the year. Other reviews from to ClassicRockRevisted were also favourable.

Anyway, without further adieu, I give you Lee Aaron via Vancouver last Friday.

So what does Lee Aaron do for leisure and entertainment aside from singing?

“Well my family and I like to hike and bike out here, and we are big fans of vintage movies….as a matter of fact, the other night we watched Akira Kurosawa. Our kids (Jett, Angella) really like the foreign language films and can read subtitles like nobody’s business (laughter), I also like to read; I’m into Jordan Peterson and Sam Harris right now”

When was the last time that someone out of the blue randomly recognized you as Lee Aaron?

“Last night actually (laughter) ; it’s true, we live by the beach and the family went for a walk as they were having a free show near where we live on the coast and as we stopped to look and mingle, a couple of people (laughter) said …hey you’re Lee Aaron!”

“The weirdest one I have to tell you was in Las Vegas during March Break. We took our kids as we wanted to see the Beatles Love Show and we wanted to drive to the Grand Canyon. Well, we also went to see the Blue Man Group, my son loves them and it was a great show. Anyway, after the show in the gift shop there was the Blue Man (laughter) signing autographs and after he signed mine this guy yells Hey your Lee Aaron!!!, ….so that was pretty weird”

How do you maintain your health including your physical youth appearance and your strong vocal chords?

“Well for about the last five years I have been very conscious of what I put in my body. I met with a health professional a few years back and it was explained to me that a lot of the foods that we normally eat can cause damage to our vocal chords as we get older; so I am very aware of what I eat and drink.

“The other thing is I’ve never really liked exercising (laughter) but I realize now that being strong is the new youth. So I keep fight by biking and hiking.”

Being a guitar player myself, I’ve always wondered what happened to John Albani who was your songwriter and guitar player for the part of your career where it took off; do you still correspond?

“Yeah John is a great guitar player and there was no rift between us or anything, he just got tired of the travel. He moved to Nashville in 94 I believe and opened up a studio and also races cars. He was also a speedfreak so to speak. I can remember him scaring the pants off me in his Mustang with nitrous a few times (laughter)

Serious question; what kind of car does Lee Aaron drive, a Mustang or a Lexus?

(more laughter)”I drive a Honda Oddesey,(laughter) It’s funny, a good friend of ours Al Harlow from Prism has two vintage Rolls Royces because he likes to tinker with vintage cars ; so he shows up (in one of them) last night at the free concert near the beach where we live and here we are in front of my Honda minivan (laughter). But with the two kids and activities that is what Lee Aaron needs to drive right now.”

What is your favourite destination spot?
” We love Europe because of its history but……. I’d have to say Hawaii, Maui is the most beautiful place on Earth. With the fauna and flora, it’s just like Heaven”

Speaking of travel, you are set to play Wacken (German festival) in a few weeks. Are you going to take the kids?

“No not this time; that festival is massive with over 100 000 people attending this year.  We are actually flying in, going to get to our trailers, rest a few hours, and after playing our set we are on our way via ground transport to the airport. We have Canadian dates bookmarked on either side of Wacken and there is really no time for the family to do any kind of sightseeing.”

So there will be no late nights and partying with the other bands ? LOL

“not this time (laughter). We might mingle with some friends in the common area before the show  but the time is so tight, we have to be accountable.”

Before I let you go, I would be shot if I didn’t bring up a Sault Ste. Marie connection that you have with a bass player named Tim Harrington. Do you remember playing the Eastgate among the 1000’s of shows you played and in particular Tim?

“I do I love Sault Ste.Marie. Actually Tim and I email back and forth and he sent me this picture a while back of him in a hockey jersey for the Soo club that they had given to him. Well I wore that Jersey in the Soo when I sang the National Anthem for the Greyhounds in 1991 I think it was but yeah, Tim is a dear dear friend and we still exchange emails from time to time.”

So there you have it; the Metal Queen is out there rocking, writing, and loading up kids in the minivan for soccer games and what not. She is also a wife and has been happily married to John Cody (her drummer) for 15 years.

Lee Aaron and band Deerfoot. Calgary Alberta, April 15, 2017.

It sounds like Lee has found balance and is enjoying life. This interview was about 45 minutes and she was a pleasure to speak with; very grounded. Before we put our cell phones down I asked her if she would ever consider playing the Soo again and without hesitation, she said she would love to. We just have to contact her agency think she would be best suited for the Machine Shop or Blasters. I don’t think there would be a problem selling either venue out.

Anyway, Lee has a message for the Soo…..Listen below:

  1. Hi Ernest – Tim Harrington here. Just wanted to thank you for the honorable mention in the Lee Aaron interview!

  2. Very cool interview Ernie!!!!! So cool to find out that the real person, and not the stage person that we know and love, is nice and down to earth. Hopefully she can make it back to the Soo sometime!! That would be so cool!!!! GREAT job Ernie!!!! Looking forward to your next one!
