‘Accessibility, accountability and transparency’: Mayor Candidate Johnson

letter to the editor

Superior Media received the following media release from Ted Johnston, candidate for Mayor, Sault Ste. Marie.

New Rules for Council.

This coming term Council will operate under a revised Municipal Act.  An Auditor General, Ombudsman, Integrity Commissioner and Lobby Registry must be put in place.  I was part of a group of concerned citizens who, along with other ratepayer associations, lobbied hard at the provincial level to get these changes so that accessibility, accountability and transparency in municipal government could come to Sault Ste. Marie.

More hard work still needs to be done.  The reluctance of current Mayor to implement these transparency tools wasted four years and left these items until the eleventh hour.  If elected I will not dither, my goal is to ensure these transparency tools function properly so we can all share the benefits of having responsible representation.

I am not the perfect candidate but I am the best choice of the imperfect candidates available and like you, am just a common citizen.  My father once told me that anyone who seeks perfection will find only disappointment.  He was surely correct, but that does not mean that we cannot do better.  We must stop fearing change, put aside the status quo, then envision and work toward a better future.

Can we do better?  Yes we can!  If you feel the same, I ask you to contact me.  By volunteering some of your valuable time we can bring community back to council.

  1. With all due respect nobody votes for transparency. They vote for doers who will lower taxes and give us better roads and services. Personally I’ll be voting for a road fixer who lowers my taxes.

  2. You’re the best choice in your own opinion but Mr. Ring is the REAL best choice for mayor. It’s time for CP to hit the road, Rory can do better.
