Staples Canada’s annual School Supply Drive is one of the many ways that Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore supports our community’s children.
The Staples Canada Back to School Supplies Drive is an annual event that works to support local students struggling to fill their back-packs with the school supplies required by schools.
To help students in need get back-to-school with the essential supplies, Staples Canada began this innovative approach to supporting young learners 13 years ago. Young people who may be disadvantaged because of economic reasons deserve the same start to a new school year as children who may not be marginalized by poverty.
Over the 13 years, the back-to school program has raised more than $14 million in cash, gift cards and supplies since 2005 for children in need. This year’s goal is $1.7 million.
Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore’s Treasurer and Service Committee Chair, Serge Viau along with Staples Sault Ste. Marie’s General Manager, Niall Orr came up to the ONNtv studios to share details on this important initiative.
Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore has been supporting the back-to-school supply drive for many years. Once again, Kiwanians will be out front of the Staples Sault location hosting BBQ’s, and inside the store supporting shoppers. A menu of delicious and affordable BBQ items is offered, as well as home baking.
The dates for the BBQ’s are coming up soon. Friday, August 24th 11 am – 4 pm; Friday August 31st 11 am to 4 pm and Tuesday Sept. 4th, 3 – 8 pm.
Tuesday Sept. 4th is the first day of school, and Niall Orr said that this is an extra special event at Staples, affectionately called, ‘Super Tuesday.’
“Over and above the BBQ, Club volunteers are also inside the store, working with cashiers, helping to move people through the lines, and gather donated school supplies.” shared Serge Viau.
“Staples let’s us know when everything is ready to go. They (Staples) package everything up, and load it onto a truck. Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore then contacts the Algoma District School Board, and Huron Superior Catholic District School Board to make arrangements for distribution.” said Viau.
“The local school boards determine where the supplies go, ultimately based on students they have identified as being in need of support.” shared Niall Orr, Staples Sault Ste. Marie General Manager.
Staples Canada’s annual School Supply Drive program pairs Staples locations with charities, schools, school boards and other local community groups that demonstrate a need for financial support, essential school supplies or with much-needed breakfast programs.
Teachers are among the most important and influential figures in a young persons’ life. “To give thanks and help teachers start off the year on the right foot, Staples announced its 2018 line-up of Teacher Appreciation Days.” Staples Canada stated.
“On August 24 & 25, as well as September 1 & 8, teachers will be eligible to save 15 % on most in-store purchases, as well as 10 % on technological purchases – plus receive a free gift – in any Staples location across Canada.”
The campaign continues through until ‘super’ Tuesday, September 4th.
