The Sault College Couagars men’s hockey team is getting set to enter their second season in the ACHA D3 league, and this past weekend I brought head coach Mike Hall into our studio to talk about the upcoming season.
The Cougars, who finished last season with a record of 12 wins, 1 loss and 2 overtime losses, have named returning forward and leading scorer Ryan Vendramin as their team captain.
Vendramin, who led the club in scoring last season with 35 goals and 59 points in 13 games, will play for the ACHA Select Team at the Student Hockey Challenge, which is being held in Krasnoyarsk, Russia from September 28th – October 8th.
During the offseason, the Cougars have signed many players who have played in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Two of those players, are Max and Steven Khull.
Forwards Max and Steven Khull, who are cousins, have both played together on the Blind River Beavers for the past three seasons, and will both be taking Police Foundations this fall at Sault College.
If forward Mark Khull returns to the Cougars this season, he will be reunited with his brother Max.
The Cougars are also bringing back a familiar face in forward Austin Rowe.
Rowe began the 2017-2018 season with the Cougars, scoring 9 times and setting up 21 others in 5 games, before joining the Soo Eagles for the remainder of the season.
The club has also signed goaltender Brian Kment for the upcoming season.
Kment played for head coach Mike Hall with the Soo North Stars from 2011-2013, where he helped the club win back to back championships.
Kment then went on to play two seasons with the Soo Thunderbirds from 2013-2015, where he helped the club win a Copeland Cup McNamara Trophy and a Dudley Hewitt Cup title back in 2015.
The Cougars will kick off their 2017-2018 season on the road on Friday, September 21st against Ferris State.
The Cougars home opener will be at the Rankin Arena on Friday, November 30th against Oakland at 7:30 p.m.
