Algoma University is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Edgar-Webkamigad has filled the vacancy for the Director of the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC). This position is a shared position reporting to both the SRSC and the University. The position is expected to play a key leadership role in raising the profile of the centre locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
“We are pleased to welcome Elizabeth Edgar-Webkamigad to our leadership team at Algoma University,” said President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina. “Algoma University (in partnership) is poised to be a national leader in the truth and reconciliation movement and we know ‘Liz’will play a significant leadership role in these efforts.
Edgar-Webkamigad comes from the Crane clan and is originally from Wiikwemikoong, Manitoulin Island. She is Ojibwe and Pottowattomi and is an intergenerational Survivor from Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation. Edgar-Webkamigad has lived in Sault Ste. Marie for 22 years and will be leaving the Program Director position at the Baawaating Family Health Team where she worked since 2012. Edgar-Webkamigad was also the Executive Director of the Indian Friendship Centre from 2007-2010. She has also held teaching positions at Sault College, Algoma University, and Queen’s University.
“Education and learning can be a series of lifelong opportunities; it is my hope to ensure our internal, local, national and ultimately our larger, global communities have the experience of being introduced to the importance of the legacy of the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre. I want to use this role to help others understand our story. With kind and good intentions, we will continue to see renewed relationships, healing, and a preservation of a true account of our history. There are many who share this kind of vision, and what a great legacy to be a part of,” said Edgar-Webkamigad.
Edgar-Webkamigad holds a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Arts in Anishinaabemowin from Algoma University and Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig. She is currently working toward completing a Master’s of Integrated Studies from Athabasca University.
Edgar-Webkamigad begins her position at the University starting on August 7, 2018.
