(WAWA, ON) – On Sunday August 19, 2018 at approximately 10:19 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Wawa) Detachment responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 approximately 15 kilometres south of Wawa in Lendrum Township, Ontario.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that a southbound vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle. The northbound vehicle carried five occupants, all of which were transported to the hospital with varying degrees of injury. Two of the five occupants have since passed away. Two occupants in the southbound vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other two occupants were transported to the hospital by Algoma Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Also assisting at the scene, were members of the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department.
At this time, the names of the deceased are being withheld pending next of kin notifications. The investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI).
Highway 17 has been re-opened in both directions.

I think it’s time to really consider a 4 lane divided toll freeway system across Canada. Very sad. My condolences to the friends and families affected.
