Flames blazed at former St. Veronica school late last night.
Located at 309 East Balfour Street in Sault Ste. Marie, this is allegedly the third fire at the site in two months. The fire was reported at approximately 11:30pm Thursday evening. Sault Police Services arrived on scene at 3:30am to extensive damages on the property.
According to a witness, four fire trucks rushed to the scene to extinguish flames that had started in the gymnasium area of the building. The witness also said that two paramedic trucks were on stand by, but that no one was injured or harmed at the scene. Sault Police have confirmed that this was arson, but the exact cause has not yet been determined.
Due to its deteriorating condition, people are asked to stay away from the building.
More on the cause of this fire as the information becomes available.
“Rushed” to the fire 4 hours later ?
Police. They didn’t need to be on scene to put the fire out. That’s what the fire trucks were for

I live on Goulais ave and my whole apt and Douglas street was filled with smoke last night. Couldn’t even breathe had to shut my windows.
That school is just like all the others that were built in the 50’s and 60’s. There is so much asbestos that its cheaper to tear down and rebuild then it is to renovate.
I went there til the school closed. If something had been done with the building in the last like nearly 30 years this wouldn’t have happened!
