1 Garrison Way. An address of monumental importance.

Garrison Way will forever become part of the rich military life – historically and present day – in Sault Ste. Marie, and the District of Algoma. 1 Garrison Way has become the official address of the Sault Armouries.

A Garrison Parade was held outside the Armouries, and included Garrison Units, 49th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA; 33 Svc Bn (SSM Det); 2310 RCACC; 155 RCAC Squadron; 46 Royal Sovereign Sea Cadets, 31 H Svcs; 4 CDSG Sig Sqn; ATCO; Shared Services Canada.

Late last week, the street signs marking the corridor along the north side of the Armouries from Pine St. to Upton Rd. were replaced by city workers. Formerly Ontario Ave., Garrison Way is meant as an acknowledgement to the men and women who served, and continue to serve, in military service from our district.

The name reflects the people inside the military establishment which was built in the 1950’s. Several local military regiments use the recently upgraded facility.

The renaming was requested by the 49th Field Regiment Commanding Officer, Lance Knox and a delegation from the local armed services. In early June 2018, City Council unanimously voted in favour of renaming a portion of Ontario Avenue that runs alongside The Sault Armouries.

Lieutenant Col V.L. Knox spoke with Superior Media before the Garrison Parade got underway. In the video above, he shares details of a recruitment initiative currently underway, as well as a co-op programme he is facilitating with the Algoma District and Huron Superior Catholic District School Boards.

LCol V.L. Knox began his military career at the Sault Armouries  42 years ago. He joined the 49th Field Regiment as a private, and has risen through the ranks over his lengthy career with the Canadian Armed Forces. LCol Knox was deployed to Afghanistan.

LCol Vance Knox has been the Commanding Officer of the 49th Artillery Regiment, RCA since October 2015. Lieutenant-Colonel E.J.G. Groulx CD  passed command to LCol Knox during a ceremony in the very building where so many have begun military careers. The building with a new address. The Sault Armouries – 1 Garrison Way.

The public is invited to participate in the Canadian Army Reserve Open house and Job Fair on Saturday, September 29.

Sault Ste. Marie Armoury will open its doors to showcase the many employment opportunities available in the Army Reserve. Visitors can also view interactive displays and participate in activities throughout the day. Interested individuals will also be able to apply on location.

The Army Reserves offer great leadership opportunities, where Canadians can learn many new and transferable skills that they can apply in their existing careers and daily lives; all while proudly serving their country. Recruiting new members to the Army Reserves is a nation-wide Army effort under Strong, Secure, Engaged: Canada’s Defence Policy. The Government of Canada has committed to increasing the size of the Reserve Force to 30,000 (an increase of 1,500) and to reduce the length of time it takes for an individual to join the Reserve Force to approximately 30 days.

The Canadian Army Reserve Open House and Job Fair at 375 Pine Street will take place on September 29, 2018 at 9:00a.m.
