For nearly half a Century, the legendary youth mentoring organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making a positive difference in the lives of Sault Ste Marie’s youth by putting a mentor in the life of every child who needs one.
WHO: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie is committed to the healthy development of children and youth through valuable mentoring programs vital in fostering their full potential.
Serving as role models, our mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and of having respect for family, peers and community. Each time we pair a child with a mentor or introduce a group of students to an in-school program, we start something incredible – a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.
Rebecca Bolton, former Executive Director at Big Brothers Big Sisters said, “A lot of kids come into our program because they are missing that positive adult role model, perhaps, to come from a parent absent home.”
Our Bigs really learn a lot about themselves. She added.
Emma, Little Sister of our program said, “I was excited, I would be able to play more often, instead of going to my neighbour when she is busy all the time!”
The agency is leading the way with Cross Gender Matches nationally. Locally the organization has 8 Big Sister Little Brother Matches and two couples matches! These unique matches are 10 of our current 61 matches!
Graedan Hayward, Little Brother of our Cross Gender matches said, ‘No matter what type of family you have, you Big Brother or Big Sister is like a part of your family.’
Nadia Zanatta, Board Member and Former Big Sister said, ‘We would go for drives a lot. We went to see Justin Beiber actually. That was fun.’
“In my childhood there were certain people I always look up to. And If I could be that person for somebody, then it is something which makes me happy.”- said Dale Rayner, Board Member and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
No doubt, being a part of this incredible youth mentoring organization will give you a life time experience to mentor children and to be proud of bringing them to their full potential.
