Community First is excited to begin the second season of its Motivate 2 Skate program this Saturday, September 22nd at the Downtown Association’s Street Party that they are sponsoring. Motivate 2 Skate was created in 2017 to provide free skate days to local schools, including equipment for students in need. The skate days include:

·         Ice time at the Community First Soo Pee Wee Arena

·         Skates and CSA-approved helmets for students that need them

·         Bus transportation to and from the arena

·         A complimentary pizza lunch

·         Community First staff onsite to help administer equipment

“We have been partnered with the Soo Pee Wee Arena for over three years now,” says Liisa Woolley, Chief of Member Service for Community First. “What we have really learned from speaking with the arena staff and local teachers is that many students don’t have the resources to try skating, and that the high costs of equipment prevents them from joining in on the fun with their classmates. We wanted to be able to provide all students the opportunity to be active and enjoy this time with their school and classmates. We introduced the program last year and supported two schools, provided skating days to over 400 local youth, and thanks to our community’s generosity – collected over 100 pairs of skates.”

Community First has also partnered with T and T Promotional Products for this initiative for the purchasing of the helmets. “The more equipment we have, the more schools we will be able to offer Motivate 2 Skate days to,” explains Woolley. “This is why we are looking to our community to donate their gently-used skates so that we can offer a wide variety of sizes and types of skates to appeal to all students.”

Community First staff are asking you to donate your gently used skates by stuffing their cruiser on Saturday, September 22nd from 12:00 noon until 7:00 pm at the GFL Memorial Gardens parking lot before the Soo Greyhounds’ Game. If you are unable to make it on Saturday, you can donate to either of their two local branches during business hours at 289 Bay Street and 535 Trunk Road.
