After getting blanked 7-0 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon in Guelph, the Algoma University Thunderbirds women’s soccer team was back in action on Sunday afternoon for a rematch against the Gryphons at Gryphon Sports Complex.
The Thunderbirds, who have yet to score their first goal this season, dropped by a score of 5-0 to the Gryphons on Sunday afternoon.
Victoria Hinchliffe recorded a hat trick for the Gryphons while Vanessa Mazur found the back of the net twice.
All three of Hinchliffe’s goals were scored in the first half.
Haileigh Locchead also had a multi point afternoon, setting up a pair of goals while Victoria Gunnarson also got on the scoresheet with one assist.
Rayne Tuer made 12 saves in the Thunderbirds loss while Santana Ferreira recorded the shutout for the Gryphons.
With the loss, the Thunderbirds record has now fallen to 0 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie.
They have also gone goalless in their first six games of the season.
The last time the Thunderbirds went goalless in their first six games of the season, was back in 2014, when they first entered the OUA.
The Gryphons, who have improved their record to 6 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties, have now moved into sole possession of first place in the OUA women’s soccer standings with 20 points, one ahead of the Ottawa Gee Gees.
The Thunderbirds will be back at Superior Heights this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against the 2-6 Laurier Golden Hawks.
