Hounds sign a handful of players

It was a busy day for the Soo Greyhounds on Wednesday, September 5th, as the club signed a total of five players for the upcoming season.

The Hounds have signed forwards Dominic Mufarreh, Alex Johnston, Cullen McLean, Tye Kartye and goaltender Ethan Taylor.

LUCKY SEVEN

Sixteen year old forward Dominic Mufarreh, who is from Livonia, Michigan, was selected by the Hounds in the 7th round (139th overall) in this year’s OHL Priority Selection after spending last season with the Compuare U16 hockey club, where he had 6 goals and 5 assists in 20 games.

Mufarreh stands 5’9 and 150 lbs.

ROUND SIX

Sixteen year old forward Alex Johnston, who was selected by the Hounds in the 6th round (118th overall) in this year’s OHL Priority Selection, spent last season with CCHL’s Kanata Lasers, where he scored 3 times and set up 10 others in 59 games.

The Stittsville, Ontario native stands 5’10 and 149 lbs.

ROUND FIFTEEN

Seventeen year old forward Cullen McLean, who was selected by the Hounds in the 15th round (298th overall) in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, spent last season with the ETAHL’s Ajax/Pickering Raiders, where he finished third in team scoring with 14 goals and 37 points in 33 games.

The Oshawa, Ontario native stands 6’0 and 153 lbs.

INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THE FIFTEENTH ROUND

Former Soo Greyhounds forward Andrew Desjardins, who was selected by the Hounds in the 15th round (296th overall) back in 2002, went on to play seven seasons in the NHL from 2010-2017, splitting time with the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks.

He also won a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks back in 2015.

EIGHT IS NEVER TOO LATE

Seventeen year old forward Tye Kartye, who is from Kingston, Ontario, was selected by the Hounds in the 8th round (158th overall) in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.

Kartye spent last season with the ETAHL’s Greater Kingston Junior Frontenacs, where he led the club in scoring with 28 goals and 51 points in 36 games.

INTERESTING FACT ABOUT ROUND EIGHT

Hounds graduate Jack Kopacka, who was drafted by the Hounds in the 8th round (157th overall) back in 2014, ended up being taken in the 4th round (93rd overall) by the Anaheim Ducks in 2016.

ROUND NINE

Seventeen year old goaltender Ethan Taylor, who was selected by the Hounds in the 9th round (178th overall) in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, spent last season with the ETAHL’s Qunite Red Devils, where he posted a 3.65 goals against average in 18 games.

The Trenton, Ontario native stands 6’3 and 185 lbs.

LOOKING AHEAD TO VANCOUVER

McLean and Kartye are both eligible for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, which will be held at the Rogers Centre in Vancouver next June.
