The Sault Area Hospital auditorium was packed with people on Wednesday evening as hospital staff members announced a milestone they reached to expand their cardiac wing – the raising of the initial $4.5 million in funding they needed to make this expansion possible.
This expansion includes a cath lab, which includes cardiac stenting – otherwise known as angioplasty – procedures to help patients stay closer to home for care.
Since the completion of this expansion in early August, over 30 angioplasty procedures have been successfully performed, allowing families to care for their loved ones right here in the Sault.
This initial goal will fund the purchase of essential medical equipment needed to perform these procedures (radiography equipment) as well as to monitor and assess patients, beds and chairs for the unit, information technology required for the program and a portion of the construction costs.
This $4.5 million goal has been met through a number of events, draws, community donations, a pledge of $250,000 from the Sault Area Hospital Volunteer Association and two incredibly generous donations.
Stay tuned to SaultOnline for more on this in the coming days.
