Women’s Thunderbirds get blanked in home opener


After getting shutout in back to back meetings against the Waterloo Warriors last weekend in Waterloo, the Algoma University Thunderbirds women’s soccer team was back in action at Superior Heights on Saturday afternoon for their home opener against the Windsor Lancers.

The Thunderbirds, who entered Saturday afternoon’s game with a record of 0 wins and 2 losses, took on a Lancers team that had 0 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties on the season.

The Thunderbirds failed to find the back of the net for the third straight game on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Windsor Lancers at Superior Heights.

Kaylea Cunliffe scored her second goal of the season at the right at the 45:00 mark of the first half to put the Lancers up 1-0.

Sophia Ferrazzo’s goal at the 85:00 mark of the game, gave the Lancers a two goal lead.

Goalkeeper Siena Novak recorded the shutout for the Lancers while Khadyia Claxton made 12 saves in the Thunderbirds loss.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action for a rematch against the Lancers tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Superior Heights.

Matt had graduated from Sault College in the General Arts and Sciences program in 2011 and has been working in the sports field ever since. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native has worked as an Athletics Assistant in the Sault College Athletics Department during his final year of school in 2011. After graduating, Stefano worked for two years at the George Leach Centre from 2011-2013 for the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Basketball Games as an Athletics Assistant. From 2013 on, Stefano has been working as the Soo Thunderbirds communications person and has also been volunteering with Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie since 2014, doing Soo Thunderbirds TV Segments.
