After getting blanked 2-0 against the York University Lions on Saturday afternoon and losing their fourth consecutive game, the Algoma University Thunderbirds men’s soccer team was back in action on Sunday afternoon for a rematch against York.
The Thunderbirds, who entered Sunday afternoon’s game on a four game losing streak, also failed to score a goal in their last four games.
On Sunday afternoon, the Thunderbirds gave up a season high seven goals as they dropped a 7-1 decision to the Lions at Superior Heights.
Naif Hadi’s first goal of the season from Tanner Wilden at the 7:00 mark of the game, put Algoma up 1-0, but York would then score seven unanswered goals, including two in the first and five in the second.
Vaughan Bianchi led the way offensively for the Lions with two goals and one assist while Steve Kloutsouniotis scored twice.
Omar Marzouk also had a two point afternoon with a goal and an assist while Gabriel Jodhan and Chris Jacovou had a goal each.
Daniel Gogarty and Sebastien Amaya had an assist each for the Lions.
Mike Argyrides recorded the shutout for the Lions while Thunderbirds goalkeeper Kevin Picard made 3 saves in the loss.
The men’s Thunderbirds will hit to road to St. Catherine’s for their final road trip of the season, beginning this Saturday at 3:15 p.m., when they take on the Brock Badgers at Varsity Soccer Field.
