With the CIBC Canada Russia Series getting set to begin in just over three weeks, it was announced today that three members of the Soo Greyhounds will be competing in this year’s event.
Forwards Morgan Frost and Barrett Hayton and goaltender Matthew Villalta are the three members of the Soo Greyhounds that will suit up for Team OHL.
Frost, who is in his fourth season with the Hounds, is currently leading the Hounds in scoring this season with 5 goals and 15 points in 10 games played.
The Aurora, Ontario native also suited up for Team OHL at last year’s CIBC Canada Russia Series, where he had 0 points in just 1 game played.
Frost, who was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round in 2017, became the first Soo Greyhound to be drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round since Jeff Carter (2003).
Hayton, who is in his third year with the Hounds, has 3 goals and 6 points in 3 games this season.
The Peterborough, Ontario native was also named Hounds captain just six days ago.
Hayton, who drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the 1st round (5th overall) in this year’s NHL Entry Draft, became just the second player to be drafted fifth overall by the Coyotes since Blake Wheeler (2004).
Villalta, who is in his third season in with the Hounds, currently has 4 wins, 2 losses, 1 overtime loss, a 2.42 goals against average, a .928 save percentage and 1 shutout in 7 games played.
The Godfrey, Ontario native was also drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 3rd round (72nd overall) in 2017.
Team OHL will play against the Russian National Junior Team in Sarnia on Thursday, November 8th, and in Oshawa on Monday, November 12th.
Hayton will participate in both games, but Frost will only suit up for the first game in Sarnia.
Villalta will also only suit up for one game, which will be the game held in Oshawa.
