At the last meeting, the city council voted to spend $58,900 to “narrow and unify its brand” which I believe is unnecessary spending. We have a brand Naturally gifted which we have been using for over 25 years. We just redesigned our city flag less than a year ago. We don’t know if, with this rebranding, the current flag will remain. All this work on the new flag may have all been for nothing.
Sault Ste. Marie has a brand, we are naturally gifted. We also have a logo.
City council should instead be directing Tourism Sault Ste. Marie to work harder and find new ways of promoting us externally. I left Sault Ste. Marie in 2011 to move to North Bay and spent a year there before moving to Muskoka.
In all the time I was away, not once did I see any external promotion for my hometown. I did a quick search on YouTube for Sault Ste. Marie and I found a few well-produced videos by our city, the problem is I never see them anywhere unless I search for them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9lD8aV_YKs
If the city strongly believes we need to reinvent ourselves why are we also paying a company from outside of our city? I know for a matter of a fact we have professionals here who can do the same work, why did we not hire locally?
The city seems to once again be wasting taxpayer dollars without doing due diligence and providing work for others outside our community. This is a practice we need to stop. We should be seeking local talent before looking outside our community.
If city council really needs to replace “naturally gifted” here’s a slogan for them to use, free of charge… “Sault Ste. Marie powered by nature, built on/by steel.”
