The Social Media Facebook Group sensation, which now boasts over 9,500 members, has seen many changes over the years. The founder, Wendy Gutcher, began her heart’s mission to help others in April 13, 2014, out of her personal home on Crawford Ave.
Since that time, Wendy, with so many volunteers over the last four years, has been able to help thousands of men, women, and children of various ages, with help of clothing, furniture, books, toys and hot meals once a week through donations of its members.
In 2017, Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands was generously granted a year lease from Social Housing to aid in her dream at the Crawford Street Hub along with other programs to help get this noteworthy group off the ground.
Now, due to an overwhelming need for affordable housing, Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands, after being granted a generous additional 3 months, has to move in order to make room for a deserving family as early as January 31, 2019.
Community help is urgently needed.
The newly founded Board of Sault Ste Marie Helping Hands composed of:
- Wendy Gutcher – President
- Christina Morrison – Vice President
- Gayle Ouellette – Treasurer
- Derek Pearce – Secretary
- Colleen Couturier – Marketing Director
- Winona Hutchinson – Communications Director
It is the hope that through the continued generosity of its members and perhaps some new ones, enough will be raised to provide a permanent location so that this group can grow to include the newly developed services such as; job training through ER Employment Consulting, and life skills through volunteerism with its continued support of the John Howard Society, Community Living Algoma and the Indian Friendship Centre.
To make this mission a reality they have applied for Not-For-Profit Status and Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands is aiming to be a positive permanent service.
To help to kick off this venture they are hosting an Open House/Fundraiser on November 14th from 12pm-2pm. All are welcome. If you would like to help please contact Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands Facebook Account or email us at [email protected].
Remember – every little bit helps and as a community “we can do great work!”
