Sault Ste. Marie broadcast veteran Bert Luciani passed away on Saturday at the age of 89.
Luciani, who worked in television for nearly 40 years, helped cover Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Sault Ste. Marie, met several Canadian prime ministers, helped with the Bon Soo Pageants and the Great Northern Opry and mentored young talent, such as ONNtv’s producer Mike Chikoski.
Chikoski worked with Luciani from the time he finished college in 1991 until his retirement in 1996, at Lake Superior Cablevision, which changed hands to Maclean Hunter Cable Inc. and finally Shaw Cable, and was also trained by him in the Sault at the MCTV building.
“He was willing to help everybody, he always loved working with people,” Chikoski told SaultOnline. “He found it enjoyable.”
Luciani is the latest broadcast veteran from the Sault to die this year, following the deaths of Radio personality George Jonescu and Albert Jones, who worked at Hyland Radio, Huron Broadcasting and MCTV.
