I’ll Take Buyers for a Memorial Cup Please Alex

DOG TREATS

OK, so I am here at Shabby Motley’s coffee shop and the time is eleven hundred hours and twenty-three minutes. I am hoping to spit this one out quick so it can go live before Sir Raftis makes his moves.

For the past few weeks, there has been tons of chatter regarding the Soo Greyhounds and whether or not they’ll be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline this week. I believe we will be Buyers and here is why.

First of all the Hounds are third overall in the league and they have only lost 4 more games than the number overall Ottawa 67″s. This Ottawa team is built for a Mem Cup appearance and the fact that the Hounds are still in the mix leads me to believe that this is the time to go for it…once again. If the dynasty London Knights can challenge in consecutive years…why the hell can’t we?

The Hounds, in my opinion, have already started to build for a run by acquiring an older forward in Jaden Peca to build upon a quality checking line. Word has it that Peca has the resiliency of a Hayden Verbeek and has “character” written all over his jersey. The Hounds have also just traded away a 19-year-old D man in Anthony DeMeo who has played barely half the games as younger defenceman on this squad.

If the Hounds brass truly believed they were a definite first or second round defeat I don’t think they would have made the move; it would have been better to slot the younger D around Anthony and bring them in slowly. The problem is that the young pups have bought into the system and proof is in the pudding. In the whole CHL, the Hounds have been ranked in 10 or 11th as an honourable mention for most of the season;…. kids, there are 60 teams in the country of junior ranks….you don’t just throw in the towel when you are ranked at the top…….I don’t care how many 2 round picks you have or DON’T HAVE !

Make no bones about it, this trade (DeMeo) was initiated by the Hounds and we saw this one coming from miles away.

Now, add this on top of the fact that Sandin’s name is still in the mix and there are rumblings coming from across the pond in relation to one of the Czech Republics best players in Jaromir Pytlik. It has already been inked in my opinion and the Hounds are waiting for either clearance from the Commissioner before going public or they are waiting on word from Mr Dubas as per Sandin. Everybody knows that you can only dress two Euros per season;

If number 9 is cleared to come back, Pucek or Pytlik would have to be moved. My educated guess is that we would keep the latter as he is (on paper) a better prospect as he just represented his team at the World Juniors. The fact that the Hounds are deep in defenceman also leads me in this direction.

Now, here is the final reason, I think that Sir Raftis is going to be bu$ing. Last year before the trade for Raddysh and Sambrook was made public a funny thing happened; a picture was posted after the world juniors with Raddysh wearing a Hounds jersey. As much as management wants to keep a lid on it…. these are just kids and they are as close to the action as it gets. They know what’s going…..don’t fool yourself if you think otherwise.

This leads us to this year’s clue; post world junior, an Instagram update appeared on star forward Nick Suzuki’s (Owen Sound Attack) line with the caption…” Next Stop SSM” and Frosty the Goalman “liked” it. Of course, that isn’t proof and I could be jumping the gun big time,  but….where there is smoke there is fire.

With all the rumours that are going around, very few have us trading any of our stars such as Villalta, Hollowell, Howdeshell, Hayton, or Frost..so if I were a betting man….which I am ……I’d say that Kyle the Prophet believes in his elite coaching staff and is waiting for the ink to dry.

I’m sure there will be many a fan calling me out if I am wrong..but I don’t care….it’s fun. I can just throw lots at the wall and hopefully something will stick. Haha. Either way…..I’m pretty confident that in the least, we won’t be sellers.

Next stop, Memorial Cup.
