January is Crime Stoppers Month

Each year during the month of January the world promotes, shares, and celebrates the success of Crime Stoppers programs. Crime Stoppers month is an opportunity to highlight the success achieved by our local program and to acknowledge the individuals and organizations that have assisted us throughout the year.

Crime Stoppers encourages members of the community to assist local law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime by overcoming the two key elements that inhibit community involvement: fear and apathy. Crime Stoppers provides an anonymous telephone line and an anonymous online reporting system to encourage citizens in the community to provide vital information on criminal activity. Crime Stoppers processes the reports and disseminates them to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. Tipsters remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a cash reward if the information leads to an arrest or successful conclusion.

Since inception, Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District is responsible for 4,361 arrests, 2,614 cases cleared, $450,571 in rewards paid, $3,805,792 in property recovered, and $7,102,093 in drugs seized. In 2018, we were responsible for 79 arrests, 87 cases cleared, $29,625 in rewards paid, $15,200 in property recovered, and $14,000 in drugs seized. Crime Stoppers has helped police solve cases of  homicide, robbery, break and enter, drugs, mischief and more.

We wouldn’t be successful if it wasn’t for the many contributors that make up our team. We are thankful to all sponsors, donors, and fundraiser participants within the community for without them our program would cease to exist. We are also thankful to our police partners, the media, and our tipsters for their partnership and their efforts to make Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District a safer place. The directors, coordinators, staff and all volunteers here in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District also deserve recognition for their commitment to seeing Crime Stoppers grow and become more successful.
