Demolition Starts at Downtown Fire Scene


Demolition at the scene of a major fire Downtown started quietly Sunday morning.

Construction crews started tearing down what was left of two buildings housing various businesses such as a barber shop and comic collectible store. The buildings were destroyed in a fire that began in the early morning hours on Thursday. Sault Ste. Marie fire crews braved bitter cold conditions all day fighting the stubborn blaze , having to return to the scene late Thursday when new flames were spotted.

The buildings housed second floor apartments. No report of injuries were reported in the fire. No cause has been determined as of Sunday. The investigation is on-going.

Queen street between Bruce and Dennis remains closed as the demolition continues.
