With a fresh blanket of snow overnight and snowbanks reaching 5 to 6 feet , you might be wondering just how much snow do we have on the ground?
The short answer is , lots.. but by no means a record.
Currently, with the additional of new snow overnight, Sault Ste. Marie Ontario has 78cm on the ground.
So far during the month of February we have seen about 48cm of snow, in January the Sault picked up 120cm while in December of 2018 we saw 28.4cm. In the month of December we had 9cm on the ground. That’s a total so far since December of 177cm.
The most snow on the ground for Sault Ste. Marie for this date was in 1971 when we had 109cm on the ground .
If you recall, the last few winters were also heavy snow years. Around this time in 2017 the Sault recorded about 101cm on the ground. A year ago, we had about 55cm.
Keep in mind what is on the ground does not reflect what has fallen. About two thirds of what falls from the clouds actually melts.
The average snowfall we can expect in Sault Ste. Marie is in the 400cm range for any given winter season.
