SaultOnline/ONNtv has learned that the Market Mall located on Second Line West is being evacuated and closed indefinitely due to an unsafe snow load on the roof of the structure.
A City Building Inspector posted the information on the entrance ways too the mall Saturday.
The Metro Grocery store remains open for now.
SaultOnline/ONNtv was informed by a employee working in the mall late Saturday afternoon that a City Inspector was on location to issue the order for evacuation and closure of the Mall. Notices were also posted on entrance doors. As of 4:19 pm, employees and shoppers were observed leaving the building.
A store owner at the mall who operates a beauty parlor told SaultOnline/ONNtv that they had concerns about the amount of snow and that the drug store doors would not open. The owner, who did not want to be identified also said none of the store owners in the mall were notified by the mall owners.
Last week, a portion of a roof at the Elliot Lake Civic Centre collapsed causing extensive damage as the result of a build up of heavy snow and ice. In 1995 a large portion of the roof at the Station Mall collapsed after a record amount of snow fell over a few days prior.
Joe Greco, manager of the IDA pharmacy tells SaultOnline/ONNtv that “anyone needing their prescription filled from the Market Mall IDA Pharmacy can call The Station Mall IDA Drug Mart between 12:00 noon and 5:00pm at 705-949-7331. The Market Mall will be closed until the snow is removed and inspected by city officials and given the all clear to open Monday”.
