Five Arrested In Gas Theft

(SPANISH, ON) – On March 11, 2019 shortly after 9:00 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft of gas from a local gas station in the town of Spanish where the suspect red SUV left westbound on Highway 17.

Investigation determined that a male paid for $35 worth of gas with two $20 dollar bills that were counterfeit. Police observed the westbound suspect vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed of more than 135 kph on Highway 17 in the Township of the North Shore and at 9:26 a.m., a traffic stop was initiated near the junction of Highway 17 and Birch Wood Circle east of the Town of Blind River. The five occupants of the vehicle (three males and two females) were arrested for the theft of fuel and possession of counterfeit money and the vehicle searched.

Police located suspected counterfeit money, credit cards, social insurance card, Quebec Driver’s licences and over five grams of suspected cannabis marihuana. Numerous cell phones and laptop computers were also seized.

As a result of the investigation, the male driver Kevens AGNANT, 20 years of age from Montreal, Quebec was charged with:

  • Theft Under $5000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of a Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1)(c) of CC;
  • Fraud Under $5000, contrary to section 380(1)(b) of the CC;
  • Possession of Counterfeit Money-Have in Custody, contrary to section 450(b) of the CC;
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act;
  • Speeding, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act; and with
  • Fail to Have Insurance Card, contrary to section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act;

Wilky VERTUS, 20 years of age, from Montreal, Quebec, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1)(c) of CC;
  • Fraud Under $5000, contrary to section 380(1)(b) of the CC; and with
  • Possession of Counterfeit Money-Have in Custody, contrary to section 450(b) of the CC.

A 17 year old male from Montreal, Quebec was charged with:

  • Possession of a Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1)(c) of CC;
  • Fraud Under $5000, contrary to section 450(b) of the CC; and with
  • Person Under 19 years of age-Possess Cannabis, contrary to section 10(1) of the Cannabis Control Act.

Kateryn DESJARDINS, 19 years of age from Repentigny, Quebec, was charged with:

  • Counterfeiting Mark-Possess (X2), contrary to section 376(2)(b), contrary to section 3765(2)(b) of the CC; and with
  • Possession of Counterfeit Money-Have in Custody, contrary to section 450(b) of the CC.

Venessa NGUYEN, 21 years of age from Chateauguay, Quebec was charged with:

  • Possession of Counterfeit Money-Have in Custody, contrary to section 450(b) of the CC.

All five accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on March 12, 2019.
