Several female students from École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River), École secondaire catholique Trillium (Chapleau), École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa) and École secondaire Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie) made their way to the Sault Ste. Marie Home Depot on Wednesday, Mar. 6 to take part in Home Depot Workshops.
During these workshops, the students were able to explore various building trades. In each workshop, students had to choose the tools and products needed for the job and apply basic knowledge of health and safety measures. This unique experience is a great way to demystify specialized trades for girls and teach students about the rewarding careers available in this sector of the economy. Statistics reveal that women are under-represented in the construction, industrial, service and motive power sector. The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) believes this annual activity held by Home Depot is a great way to raise the level of girls’ confidence while initiating them to non-traditional careers. The CSCNO thanks Home Depot for its support in providing this initial workshop initiative for female high school students in the Algoma district.
