Saints and Sharks Triumph

Sault Ste. Marie: St. Mary’s College hosted the 2019 Tip-Off Classic for elementary basketball on Friday and Saturday and when the final buzzer sounded St. Basil Saints and St. Mary’s French Immersion Sharks came away with titles.

In the boys competition, St. Basil jumped to a big lead and then held off a St. Paul Patriots rally to post a 21-19 victory. Jaxon Alexander had 9 point and Reese Martin 5 points to lead the Saints.

Top shooter for St. Paul was Joseph Buckley with 11 points. Nick Vecchio chipped in 3 points for the Patriots.

St. Basil advanced to the final thanks to a 27-14 semifinal victory over Holy Cross Gfiffins.
Alexander had 9 points in that game. Nate Carter led the Griffins with 6 points. In the other
semifinal, St. Paul edged St. Mary’s French Immersion 19-18. Buckley had 17 points for the
Patriots while Jayce Prgomet led the Sharks with 6 points.

In the girls draw, St. Mary’s French Immersion rolled to a 16-9 victory over St. Basil. Ava
Provenzano had 6 points and Julia DeBenedet 4 points for the Sharks. Top scorer for the Saints was Mia Iachetta with 5 points.

St. Mary’s advanced to the final with an 11-2 win over St. Paul in the semifinals. Provenzano had 3 points in that game. St. Basil beat Our Lady of Lourdes 17-3 in the other semifinal. Caitlin Senecal had 10 points for the Saints.

The regular season begins the first week of April.
