On March 6, 2019 at approximately 3:20 p.m. members from the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Batchawana Police Service observed a known male driver, who was a suspended driver, operating a motor vehicle on Frontenac Street, Batchawana First Nation, Ontario.
The officers conducted a traffic stop and as a result of further investigation, Jason GILBERT, 35 years-old of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was charged with the following:
Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code (CC),
Possession of a firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered with contrary to Section 108(1)(b) of the CC,
Careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition contrary to Section 86(1) of the CC,
Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm contrary to Section 94 of the CC,
Three counts of driving while under suspension contrary to Section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
The accused is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on March 7, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice located at 426 Queen Street, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
