Police say one person killed in fire at assisted living facility in Oakville

OAKVILLE, Ont. — Police say one person is dead after a fire at an assisted living facility in Oakville, Ont.

First responders were called to the Jean and Howard Caine Apartments around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Halton regional police say firefighters managed to keep the fire to a single unit, but the apartment’s lone occupant — an elderly woman — died after being taken to hospital.

Police say the woman’s identity is being withheld until her next of kin are notified.

No one else was injured, and residents who were forced to leave have been allowed to return to their homes.

Police say the cause of the fire is under investigation by the province’s fire marshal.
