Jane's Walk

The Sault Ste Marie Jane’s Walk committee is pleased to announce that the popular Jane’s Walk Festival will be taking place at locations throughout the city from Friday May 3 to Sunday May 5, 2019.

The festival has seen overwhelming success in the past three years, and this year’s offerings will include walks exploring areas such as Shingwauk Residential School, Top Sail Island, the old town cemetery, Whitefish Island, Jamestown, and downtown Queen Street. Walks are citizen-led and will explore topics such as wild foraging, art, architecture, food security, the urban forest, family and personal history and civic issues.

The Festival’s kick-off event will take place on Friday May 3rd from 7-9p m at the Stone House and will include a slideshow and presentation of archival photos from the city’s past, short films about urban planning and community building, and an open discussion. Admission is by donation. The Festival’s closing event will take place at the Dryer Fire pop-up shop at 128 Bruce Street on Sunday May 5th following  the day’s walks. Please visit the event Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/JanesWalkSSM for more information and a detailed schedule of walks.

Jane’s Walk is a citizen-led community-based approach to city building, honouring the work of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs. Since 2007, this free international walking festival seeks to bring citizens together in the spirit of meaningful engagement with neighbourhoods and public spaces by exploring these places on foot. Through the lens of the civic, cultural and personal histories, the walks seek to inspire civic leadership, urban repair and creative solutions to help make urban spaces welcoming for all people.

Jane’s Walks take place during the first weekend of May in 225 cities around the world, spanning 37 countries and 6 continents.
