Man charged with second-degree murder in alleged Mother’s Day killing of mom

OSHAWA, Ont. — Police east of Toronto say a 56-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother.

Investigators say they were called to an apartment fire in Oshawa, Ont., early Sunday evening and found the injured 83-year-old inside.

They say Yvonne Mooney died in hospital later and her son, Timothy Mooney, was arrested and charged shortly afterward.

Police say the pair lived in the apartment together.

Timothy Mooney is being held for a bail hearing.

It’s the fifth homicide in the region this year.
