2019 World Martial Arts Championship Cancelled

Martial Arts

SaultOnline has recently learned that the 2019 World Martial Arts Championship, scheduled to take place at GFL Memorial Gardens in July, has been cancelled.

A source told SaultOnline that this event, never held in Canada before, let alone Sault Ste. Marie, was cancelled due to a new Combative Sports Act passed by the Ontario Government.

“We have received a lot of support for this championship but unfortunately not what we needed from the Ontario Government,” an email sent to Martial Arts institutions involved in the tournament.

“Until April we had the understanding that the Ontario government would give us a band-aid to allow the Championship to continue. We know changes are coming in the fall to the legislation. That being said even with the sanctioning in place, the July 2019 Championship was stopped and deemed illegal.”

The World MMK Hapkido Championships Directors are still extending an invitation to all those who have committed to travel here to please continue to do so, stating that they still have guests from around the world offering a variety of seminars Saturday, July 27, 2019.

Stay tuned to SaultOnline for developments on this story.

  1. I read up on the changes and don’t see how this is stopping the championship.
Might be other factors involved too.

  2. sorry to read that this event is cancelled—-i do not understand the reasoning but will continue to learn why —
