Black Sox Host Local Tournament

Both the Bantam 15u and Bantam 14u Black Sox competed in their annual “Wood Bat Invitational” tournament this past weekend, June 21-23. The local event included a 4-game round robin format, with championship games held on Sunday afternoon.

The 15u Sox started their weekend off by splitting a Friday night double-header. In game one, the 15u Sox fell to Rudyard 7-5. Lucas Malcolm notched two hits while Carter Gallivan added a double.

The following game featured the 15u Sox edging out the 14u Sox by a score of 11-9. Malcolm McGugan picked up the win on the mound, going 2 innings while striking out 4. Carter Gallivan came in for the save in relief. Wesley Pomeroy had 4 RBIs for the 14u Sox in the loss.

On Saturday, the 14u Sox found themselves neck and neck with Rudyard, taking a 3-3 game into the final inning before ultimately dropping the contest 4-3. Cole Masse and Connor Bruzas split the duties on the mound, throwing 4 innings and 3 innings respectfully. Bouncing back from two straight losses, the 14u Sox prevailed in their third match-up of the weekend, beating North Bay 14-4. Carmine Perna got the win on the mound, logging 4 innings allowing 1 earned run.

In addition, a strong performance from Valley East in the round robin led to a 2-1-1 record. This included a 6-5 win over the 15u Sox, and a 4-4 tie against the 14u Sox.

On Sunday, the No.1 seed Rudyard advanced to play the No.2 seed Valley East for the tournament crown. The thrilling contest ended with Rudyard winning the championship 8-1, completing a perfect 5-0 weekend.

In bronze medal action the 14u Sox defeated the 15u Sox by a score of 5-2. Cole Masse recorded the win on the mound, throwing 3 and 2/3rds innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 3. Michael Hapanovich, Michael Starzomski, Ty Beaupre and Masse each drove in RBIs in the win.
