‘Honour’ Blocks Wanted

Is there a veteran in your life that you would like to honour?  Would you like to show your support for the Canadian Armed Forces?  Are you a skilled quilter looking for a new challenge?  Or are you curious about quilting and want to try it?  Have we got a challenge for you!

Sault Ste. Marie’s Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild is encouraging community members to take part in an Honour Quilt Block Challenge – even if you have no prior quilting experience.  This will be your chance to have one of your quilt blocks compiled into a quilt that will be submitted to the Quilts of Valour to show your support for our injured Canadian Armed Forces – past and present.

We are asking community members to contribute a 10 ½” Log Cabin Block (pictured below) which will be assembled by our Guild members into a finished quilt and donated to Quilts of Valour on your behalf.  The blocks can be hand sewn or machine stitched.  The block should be made using Red, White and Yellow, 100% cotton fabric.  The yellow center square symbolizes the welcoming light in the window and the red and white on either side of the log cabin represents Canada.

The cutting instructions include the following:

Yellow – 1 – 2 ½” square for center

White – 1 2 ½” X 4 ½”                 Red – 1 – 2 ½” square

1 – 2 ½” X 6 ½”                        1 – 2 ½” X 4 ½”

1 – 2 ½” X 8 ½”                        1 – 2 ½” X 6 ½”

1 – 2 ½” X 10 ½”                      1 – 2 ½” X 8 ½”

¼” seam allowances used please.

You can get the instructions on how to complete the block at www.saultquilts.com

Your quilt block will also be displayed at our upcoming Quilt Show at the Royal Canadian Legion on July 13 and 14, 2019.  Please drop off your block at Life’s a Stitch, 516 Queen St. E., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, before July 5th to ensure that your blocks will be displayed at the Quilt Show.

Quilts of Valour is a Canadian non-profit organization with a mission to ensure that injured Canadian Forces members are recognized for their service and commitment to our country.  They are honoured through the presentation of quilts which provide comfort for past and present Canadian Forces members.
