Honouring Our Sisters

The Indigenous Women’s Anti-Violence Task Force and Missanabie Cree will host a free gathering on June 25-26th, 8:30–4:30 pm, in Baawaating (Sault Ste. Marie) at the Quattro Hotel. The gathering, “Honouring Our Sisters”, seeks to honour those impacted by MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA, survivors of domestic violence, and individuals at risk. We invite the community to visit and engage with one another, receive traditional teachings, listen to guest speakers, and participate in dialogue regarding the newly released final inquiry report.

“Honouring Our Sisters” will begin with a sunrise ceremony at 6:00 am each day for all who wish to attend, followed by an opening ceremony and scheduled activities. The gathering will provide useful information and facilitators will lead grounding exercises, art-based activities and more. The intention is to hold a space for people to connect over these experiences and discuss self-determined, grassroots, and Indigenous community-based solutions and ways of healing that respect our Indigenous sovereignty. Ultimately we must take into account the perspectives and needs of a diverse group of Indigenous peoples.

Women, girls, 2SLGBTQQIA and gender diverse people face disproportionate levels of intimate partner and systemic violence. It is important to honour those we have lost and engage in actions to prevent gender-based and colonial violence. Please join us in honouring our loved ones–but also in recognizing the bravery and resolve possessed by all who are impacted by this ongoing genocide.

Free lunch and refreshments are provided for participants.

The Indigenous Women’s Anti-Violence Task Force (IWAVTF) of Baawaating is an Indigenous-led collective that is committed to ending all forms of violence and protecting the honour and value of all Indigenous women, girls, 2SLGBTQQIA and gender diverse people through culturally-safe responses.

Accessibility information: The Quattro Hotel and Conference Centre is wheelchair accessible. Additionally, a separate area for quietness and reflection has been made available and there will be a sacred fire on site.

To register, or if you have any questions please contact the IWAVTF: [email protected] or 705 297-5435, or find Honouring Our Sisters on Facebook here and Eventbrite here.
