Man dies after falling down elevator shaft at CBC building in Toronto

TORONTO — Officials say a man has died after falling into the elevator shaft of the CBC building in downtown Toronto.

Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson says witnesses reported seeing the man swing from the elevator cables before falling to his death on Saturday evening.

Hopkinson says the man’s injuries were severe.

Toronto district fire chief Stephan Powell says firefighters were called to the scene at about 6 p.m. and found the man on top of the elevator car, which was on the first floor.

Powell say they were able to get the man off of the car, but Hopkinson says CPR was unsuccessful.

Neither Hopkinson nor Powell gave any details about the man’s identity.

The Ministry of Labour will be investigating.
