Jackson and Palumbo Have a Good Night

We held our 6th racenight of the season at Laird International Raceway on Thursday Aug 15th.  Late afternoon there were some heavy clouds overhead, but by race time they had moved on and the skies were clear making way for another exciting night of racing.

In the factory stock division fast qualifier was Jerry Ross with a time of 16.127 seconds around the 1/3 mile oval.  Buddy Palahnuk took the win in both heat races and was on his way to win the feature later in the night but was disqualified after overrunning his qualifying time by more than a quarter second on a few laps.  Jerry Ross went on to win the feature, with Jamie Fox 2nd, Jarritt Varcoe 3rd, and Jon Diodati 4th.

Ross continues to lead in the points battle in the division with 222 points.  Fox moved up to second in the division 40 points behind, and Diodati fell back one place 60 points behind the leader after suffering a breakdown and unable to run in the second heat or feature during the night.

In the Super Late Model division Rob Hiiemaa was fast qualifier of seven cars, with a time of 14.219 seconds.  Dustin Jackson made a clean sweep taking the checkered flag in both heats and the feature during the night.  Jackson also ran in the Modified division during the night.  Hiiemaa snagged 2nd in heat 2 and the feature.  Jay Palumbo also had a good night with a 2nd place finish in heat 2, and a 3rd place finish in the feature.  Zak St. John pulled up 3rd in both heats, and 4th in the feature.

In the Late Model points championship, Hiiemaa maintains first place with 215 points.  Ron Raynor Jr. was missing during the night and slipped from 2nd in the division to 4th, now 52 points behind Hiiemaa.  With his wins for the night Jackson has moved up to 2nd in the division, 33 points back.  Jake Irwin retains his third place position, now 45 points back from the leader.

In the Michigan Modified division 9 cars were out for the night, of which 8 qualified. Dustin Jackson was fast qualifier with a time of 14.899 seconds.  Jackson took a win in heat 1, 2nd in heat 2, and 3rd in the feature.  Jay Palumbo, also driving double duty in the late model division had a good night with a win in heat 2, and top spot in the feature.  Josh Ware pulled a 3rd place finish in heat 1, was missing in heat 2, and pulled up 2nd in the feature.

Mark Laakso is leader in points in the modified division now with 187 points.  Laakso managed a 2nd place finish in heat 1, 3rd in heat 2, and 4th in the feature; he finished ahead of Roddy Bolduc in each race, widening his points lead in the division over Bolduc to 18 points from 14 going into the race night.  With the absence of John Ross for the night, Michael Carbone has moved into 3rd place in the championship battle, 69 points back.

In Factory Four action Brent and Rebecca Fewchuk dominated.  Rebecca was fast qualifier with 17.899 seconds.  Brent swept both heats and the feature with a win, with Rebecca taking second.  Kayla Kernell took third in heat heat 1, and Jason Kern took 3rd in heat 2 and the feature.

In points, Kern opened his lead over Kurnell slightly from 8 points going in to 13 points after the night, with and accumulated total for the season of 145 points.

Racing action at Laird International Raceway is winding down for the season, with just one regular season race to go next Thursday Aug 22, and our Northern Stars Invitational on the weekend of Sept 13 & 14 (with a rain date of Sept 15th if needed).
